He set the NCAA Division I-A record with eight career punt returns for touchdowns — a record he claimed on November 5, 2003 against Colorado, breaking a tie with four players including Nebraska Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers. The record remains tied to this day, more than two decades later. Welker recorded his first punt return touchdown in just his fourth college game (a 63-yard return against Louisiana-Lafayette as a freshman) and continued to torment opposing special teams throughout his four years in Lubbock. Beyond his return game, he set Texas Tech school records for career receptions and receiving yardage, finishing with 259 receptions for 3,019 yards and 21 touchdowns. He became a centerpiece of the Red Raiders' high-powered offense, contributed across receiving, rushing, and special teams, and helped quarterback B.J. Symons set a single-season NCAA passing record during Welker's senior 2003 season.
