The Patriots' All-Time Receptions Leader
Wes Welker transformed the slot receiver position during his six seasons in New England. After arriving via trade from the Miami Dolphins in 2007, Welker immediately broke Troy Brown's single-season Patriots reception record with 112 catches — then raised the bar with 123 receptions in 2009 (leading the NFL) and built three consecutive 100-catch seasons from 2007 to 2009. He reached 500 career catches with the Patriots in just 70 games — an NFL record at the time — and finished his New England tenure as the franchise's all-time leading receiver with 672 receptions, a record that has anchored his standing as one of the most consistent and productive receivers in Patriots history. He was selected to the Pro Bowl, the All-Pro Team, or both in every season of his Patriots career — a six-season run of sustained elite recognition.
The Undrafted Path to NFL History
Welker's career is one of the most remarkable undrafted-player stories in NFL history. Not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine after his Texas Tech career, Welker signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2004, was waived, and caught on with the Miami Dolphins where he built his reputation as a special teams contributor and slot receiver. His 2007 trade to New England transformed his career — and he became the first player in NFL history to record five 100-reception seasons, joining Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice as one of the few receivers to reach even four such seasons at the time. Welker also holds the record for the most receptions by any undrafted player in NFL history, surpassing Rod Smith in 2014. He finished his 12-season career (Chargers, Dolphins, Patriots, Broncos, Rams) with 903 receptions, 9,924 receiving yards, 50 receiving touchdowns, and 16,797 all-purpose yards.
