One of College Football's Most Dominant Runners

Ricky Williams' Texas career was defined by a relentless, punishing running style that overwhelmed defenses across major college football. An astonishing 68.3% of his 6,279 career rushing yards came after initial contact — a testament to the power, balance, and tenacity that made him nearly impossible to bring down with a single tackler. His 1998 Heisman season produced some of the most spectacular single-game performances in college football history: 350 yards and five touchdowns against Iowa State, 318 yards and six touchdowns against Rice, and a record-setting 668 rushing yards across consecutive games. Williams posted 11 career 200-yard rushing games and 27 career 100-yard games — both school records — and set NCAA records for rushing yards in consecutive games and scoring among non-kickers. His combination of power and breakaway speed at 5'10", 225 pounds made him one of the most physically dominant college runners of all time.

The Heisman and the NCAA Rushing Record

Williams' dominance earned him a clean sweep of college football's highest honors in 1998. He won the Heisman Trophy with 43% of first-place votes — then the highest percentage in the award's history — became just the second Longhorn ever to win it (after Earl Campbell), and broke Tony Dorsett's 22-year-old NCAA career rushing record on a 60-yard touchdown run against rival Texas A&M, with Dorsett himself on the sideline to congratulate him. He finished his career (1995-1998) with 6,279 rushing yards, 75 total touchdowns, a then-NCAA-record 6.21 career yards per carry (surpassing Archie Griffin), and 21 NCAA records. He also became the first-ever two-time Doak Walker Award winner and swept the 1998 Maxwell and Walter Camp Player of the Year awards. Texas retired his #34 jersey in 2000, and he was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Selected fifth overall in the 1999 NFL Draft, Williams went on to lead the NFL in rushing in 2002 — but his legendary Texas tenure remains the foundation of his place in football history.
