One of the Greatest Linebackers in NFL History

Ray Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest middle linebackers ever to play professional football. A first-round pick of the expansion Ravens in 1996 — only the franchise's second-ever draft choice — Lewis played his entire 17-year career in Baltimore, earning 13 Pro Bowl selections, seven First-Team All-Pro honors, and two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards (2000, 2003). Renowned for his ferocious tackling, sideline-to-sideline range, and unmatched leadership and intensity, Lewis anchored some of the most dominant defenses in NFL history. He is the only player in NFL history to record at least 40 career sacks and 30 career interceptions (41.5 sacks, 31 interceptions), and finished his career as the Ravens' all-time leader in tackles, leading the team in that category in 14 of his 17 seasons. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018 in his first year of eligibility and named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 2000s.

Two Championships and a Super Bowl MVP

Lewis delivered two Super Bowl championships to Baltimore, eleven years apart, bookending a Hall of Fame career. In the 2000 season, he led one of the greatest defenses in NFL history — a unit that set 16-game single-season records for fewest points allowed (165) and fewest rushing yards allowed (970), with four shutouts — to a 34-7 victory over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV, earning Super Bowl MVP honors and becoming just the second player ever to win Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP in the same season. Twelve years later, in his final NFL season, Lewis capped his career with a second championship, leading the Ravens to a 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII before retiring as a champion. Across his career, he started at middle linebacker in four AFC Championship Games and two Super Bowls, cementing his status as the greatest player in Ravens franchise history and one of the defining defensive forces of his generation.
