The Original Face of the Jaguars Franchise

Mark Brunell is the most important quarterback in Jacksonville Jaguars history and the player who defined the franchise's golden era. Acquired from the Green Bay Packers in the first trade in franchise history in 1995, the left-handed, mobile Brunell became the expansion team's first starting quarterback and remains its all-time passing leader to this day — with 25,698 passing yards, 144 touchdowns, and 2,184 completions, all still franchise records. Under his leadership, the Jaguars became the first NFL expansion team to make the playoffs three times in its first four seasons, reaching two AFC Championship Games (1996 and 1999) and winning two AFC Central titles. His signature moment came in the 1996 playoffs — a 30-27 AFC Divisional Round upset of the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium, one of the most memorable games in franchise history, that capped Jacksonville's improbable run from 4-7 to within a game of the Super Bowl. Brunell was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars, the team's ring of honor, in 2013.

A Pro Bowl Career and a Super Bowl Ring

Brunell's accomplishments extended across a 19-year NFL career. He earned three Pro Bowl selections with the Jaguars and was named Pro Bowl MVP, and in 1996 he led the entire NFL with a career-high 4,367 passing yards. A dual-threat talent known for his mobility and his left-handed release, Brunell guided Jacksonville to an average of twelve wins per year from 1997 to 1999, anchoring a nucleus that included Jimmy Smith, Keenan McCardell, Fred Taylor, and Tony Boselli under head coach Tom Coughlin. After his Jaguars tenure, he led Washington to an NFC East title in 2005, and late in his career he earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl XLIV championship team, where he served as the backup quarterback and holder. He finished his career with 32,072 passing yards and 184 touchdowns across stints with the Packers, Jaguars, Washington, Saints, and Jets. A 1991 national champion at the University of Washington and 1991 Rose Bowl MVP, Brunell has since pursued a coaching career in the NFL.
