The Seahawks' All-Time Sack Leader
Jacob Green is the most productive pass rusher in Seattle Seahawks franchise history. Across 11 seasons at left defensive end (1980-1991), Green recorded 97.5 official sacks — a total that stood as the franchise record by a wide margin for decades — and 115.5 unofficial sacks when including his first two seasons (sacks did not become an official NFL statistic until 1982, Green's third year). At the time of his retirement, his unofficial total ranked third on the NFL's all-time sack list, behind only Hall of Famers Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor. Green posted at least 12.0 sacks in six different seasons — including four consecutive seasons from 1983 to 1986 — and set a career high with 16.0 sacks in 1983. He started 176 of 178 games played in Seattle, the third-most starts in franchise history at the time behind only Hall of Famers Steve Largent and Walter Jones. Green was inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor on September 3, 1995, as just the second defensive player so honored.
The "Die Hards" and a College Hall of Fame Career
Green was a cornerstone of the Seahawks' rise from expansion-era cellar-dweller to AFC contender in the 1980s. Alongside fellow defensive linemen Jeff Bryant and Joe Nash, Green formed the "Die Hards" trio that anchored the Chuck Knox-era defenses, helping Seattle reach the playoffs in back-to-back seasons and the 1983 AFC Championship Game — the franchise's first deep postseason run. His individual highlights included a then-Seahawks single-game record 3.5 sacks against the Los Angeles Raiders in 1983, a 73-yard interception return for a touchdown (the NFL's longest that season), and a then-playoff-record 2.5 sacks in a Wild Card game. Before his pro career, Green starred at Texas A&M (1977-1979), where he set school records with 20 sacks in 1979 and 12 career forced fumbles and earned First-Team All-American honors — accomplishments that earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2019. The Seahawks selected him 10th overall in the 1980 NFL Draft, and he made an immediate impact, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
