The Greatest All-Around Center in NBA History
Hakeem Olajuwon is widely regarded as the most complete center ever to play the game. Selected first overall in the legendary 1984 NBA Draft — ahead of Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and John Stockton — Olajuwon spent 17 of his 18 seasons with the Houston Rockets, finishing his career as the NBA's all-time leader in blocked shots (3,830) and as the only player in league history to record more than 3,000 blocks and 2,000 steals. Famous for the footwork-driven post move known as the "Dream Shake," Olajuwon combined offensive skill, defensive dominance, and agility unprecedented for a seven-footer — skills he developed from playing soccer and team handball as a boy in Nigeria before taking up basketball at age 15. He was a 12-time All-Star, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and the 1994 NBA MVP, and was named to both the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team (1996) and the NBA 75th Anniversary Team (2021). He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Back-to-Back Champion and a Season Like No Other
Olajuwon delivered the defining stretch of his career in 1994 and 1995. He led the Houston Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships — defeating Patrick Ewing's New York Knicks in seven games in 1994 and sweeping Shaquille O'Neal's Orlando Magic in 1995 — and was named NBA Finals MVP both years. In the 1993-94 season, he became the only player in NBA history to win the NBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, AND Finals MVP awards in a single season. His Game 6 block of John Starks's potential championship-winning three-pointer in the 1994 Finals remains one of the most iconic defensive plays in NBA history. Across the two title runs, Olajuwon famously outdueled a series of Hall of Fame centers — Ewing, O'Neal, David Robinson, and others — without an All-Star teammate, cementing his standing as the centerpiece of the only championship era in Houston Rockets history. He remains the franchise's all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and games played, and one of the most beloved figures in Houston sports history.
