The Only Defensive Heisman Winner — and a Raiders Cornerstone
Charles Woodson's career began with a singular distinction that has never been matched. In 1997, the Michigan cornerback became the only primarily defensive player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, leading the Wolverines to a share of the national championship while also contributing as a punt returner and receiver — and sweeping the Jim Thorpe, Bronko Nagurski, Chuck Bednarik, and Walter Camp Awards in the same season. The Raiders drafted him fourth overall in 1998, and he made an immediate impact, earning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl berth as a rookie. Woodson played 11 of his 18 NFL seasons with the Raiders (1998-2005 and 2013-2015), recording 27 of his interceptions in the Silver and Black and becoming the Raiders' franchise career leader in forced fumbles and passes defended. He appeared in Super Bowl XXXVII with Oakland and remains one of the most beloved defensive players in franchise history.
A Hall of Fame Career on Both Sides of His Prime
Woodson's career featured a remarkable two-act arc. After eight seasons with the Raiders, he signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2006, where he reinvented himself as a roving playmaker — winning the 2009 AP Defensive Player of the Year award (with nine interceptions), helping Green Bay win Super Bowl XLV following the 2010 season, and intercepting 38 of his 65 career passes as a Packer — before returning to Oakland for his final three seasons. He retired in 2015 with 65 career interceptions (tied for fifth-most in NFL history), 1,120 tackles, 20 sacks, 33 forced fumbles, and a record-tying 13 defensive touchdowns. In 2014, he became the first player in NFL history to record 50 career interceptions and 20 sacks. A nine-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time First-Team All-Pro named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 2000s, Woodson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 in his first year of eligibility — joining his Heisman-race rivals Peyton Manning and Randy Moss in Canton. He is one of only two players (with Marcus Allen) to win the Heisman Trophy, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and a Super Bowl in his career.
